In The City - September Update

Time is ticking, and with just six weeks remaining until this year's In The City (13th-15th October), here's an update of our confirmations so far and what's left to be announced, from our conference keynotes and panels, our live programme and our new Hive education arm.

Expect more announcements in the coming week, including a live announcement of more exciting bands and showcases in the coming days

Keynotes

Confirmed keynotes include:

Bertis Downs, R.E.M's Manager and Lawyer, will be in conversation with 
Rob Dickins, giving delegates a unique and provocative insight into what it’s like to manage one of the world’s biggest bands. (Read more)

Jay Brown, Jay-Z’s Business Partner & Co-Founder of Roc Nation, in conversation with Nick Raphael, MD of Epic Records. (Read more)
 
Mike Pickering, MD of the newly re-launched Deconstruction Records and Manchester dance music legend, will be in conversation with acclaimed journalist Paul Morley. (Read more)

Dance keynote, featuring Jho Oakley (Manager of Pendulum, Chase and Status and Sub Focus), Nick Halkes (Co-founder of XL and Positiva) and Caroline Protheroe (Manager of David Guetta and former Head of Dance at Virgin Records). (Read more)

Panels

'What's the O2?' - Jasmine Skee, O2's Head of Music Sponsorship is joined by Live Nation's Chris O'Donnell and SJM's Chris Yorke, to explain the workings of the major industry player. (Read more)

'A Question of Sport' - Long-time artist manager John Arnison will quiz a panel of sports talent and executives to find out what the music business can learn from the sports world. (Read more)

'Battle of the Living Room' - Ted Cohen, Managing Partner at TAG Strategic studies the future of home entertainment, including its implications for both artist and consumer. (Read more)

'21st Century Ticketing' - Steve Machin, Stormcrowd founder and former Head of Music at Ticketmaster Europe unravels the future of ticketing live events. (Read more

In The City Live

Our current line-up features No Age, Mount Kimbie, Sky Larkin, Male Bonding, Yuck, Crystal Fighters, Kisses, Factory Floor, oOoOO, White Ring, Skepta, On No Ono, O Children, Mazes, Is Tropical, T3ETH, D/R/U/G/S, Porcelain Raft, with many more still to be announced. (Read more)

Wristbands are available for only £29 for three nights of live shows.  Wristband plus three nights stay at Hatters Hostel in Manchester’s Northern Quarter is available for only £72. Both wristbands and hostel package are available from HMV Tickets

The Hive

The Hive is a brand new, exciting programme of educational events designed for a younger generation of delegates looking for an entry point into the music industry. The Hive is aimed at providing a stimulating, informative and thought provoking programme for students, emerging artists and budding entrepreneurs (16+) and will take place on the 13th and 14th October in The Malmaison Hotel in Manchester. 

Confirmed events for the Hive include:

The Musicians Union Guide to Doing It Yourself 
The Musicians’ Union talks delegates through the trials and tribulations of going it alone and releasing a record off your own back.

The CMU Seminars 
Chris Cooke, editor of music industry publication CMU Daily and founder of Unlimited Media, presents the CMU Seminars, covering topics from breaking into the business to how best to make money in the modern music industry. 

The Music Managers’ Panel 
Successful and established music managers discuss what it is to be a manager in 2010 and how their roles and responsibilities have changed with recent industry developments

My Generation, Next Generation
Drowned in Sound founder Sean Adams and Oliver Clueit, founder of My Band Is Better Than Your Band, discuss the ever influential role of blogging, moving from the murky depths of cyber space to the forefront of trend setting and taste making.

Write It, Record It, Mix It
Access To Music and JAMES host a producer masterclass taking delegates right through the creative process. From writing and recording to mixing and mastering, delegates will be able to fully immerse themselves aboard the 34 foot long Rock Hopper Bus, a purpose built mobile recording studio.

The Insiders Guide To The Media 
Ray Paul, one the founding members of BBC Radio 1 Xtra, presents a workshop discussing and outlining the different roles of the media and the power media has to influence consumers. A must for all budding young journalists and publicists.

 
The Untapped Goldmine: The Importance Of Publishing 
We aren't saying we can make you a fortune, but there is money out there you are entitled too and we want you to have it! Listen to some of the country's biggest publishers talk you through everything you need to know about royalties and how you should go about getting yours.  

The Northern Song Collective Songwriting Masterclass 
The newly established Northern Song Collective gives you a masterclass in songwriting guided by industry heavyweights Jim Spencer, producer of Jonny Marr and The Charlatans, and Mercury Prize nominated John Bramwell from I Am Kloot. They will be joined by Northern Song Collective's own Jimmy Doherty. 

Learning How To Sell Yourself: The Art Of Networking
They say it’s not what you know, but who you know. For those just starting out in the business how do you know who to approach and what's the best way to pitch the conversation? Learn the lowdown and to put it into practice each day after sessions at The Hive come to a close.  

The In The City Hive is a separately ticketed event from the traditional In The City Conference with passes priced at just £60. This includes free entry to all In The City live events across 13th - 15th October.
